Continuous improvement leads to significant positive change.

Located a few miles from the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is the third busiest airport in Europe for passenger throughput, and the fourth busiest for cargo movements. It is also one of the main hubs for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the world’s oldest airline to still operate under its original name. Carrying 34.1 million passengers and 621,000 tonnes of cargo, KLM and KLM Cityhopper form the heart of the KLM Group. Via a vast network of 92 European cities and 70 intercontinental destinations, KLM offers direct services to key economic centres all over the world.

KLM is actively driving sustainable growth at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and is constantly seeking ways to support this through continuous improvement. One of the solutions they identified was updating their aircraft fuelling operations - KLM identified that if they had access to real-time data regarding flights and turnarounds, they could increase operational efficiency and achieve faster, more accurate refuelling. This would not only reduce flight turnaround times, but save fuel and associated CO2 on every flight.

Increased efficiency through i6 integration.

We were delighted to be able to help KLM at AMS achieve this through the use of our real-time digital solutions.

To improve operational efficiency, i6 has digitalised KLM’s manual and paper-based fuelling processes through fuel meter integrations on fuel trucks, as well as bespoke software integrations with back-office and third-party systems. This enhances efficiency for KLM’s ground operations at Schiphol with the ability to now deliver electronic fuel tickets to the cockpit, instead of physical fuel tickets that were printed after each refuel.

“i6 has been able to successfully integrate their software with our current operational management platform - providing a real-time data solution. The technology will enable a much smarter and accurate fuelling operation at Schiphol.” - Peter Galjé, Unit Manager KLM Refuelling Department at KLM

Not only will this reduce paper usage, but KLM is also able to replace the need to physically hand over paper tickets to the cockpit crew - resulting in a quicker, more environmentally-friendly, and socially-distanced refuelling process.

This integration also provides a digital infrastructure for the airline to be able to further digitalise fuelling operations, such as e-fuelling, where the refueller and pilot are able to communicate during refuelling in real-time.

“We’re delighted to announce the successful integration with KLM which is a huge milestone for us. We continue to support the aviation industry and enable climate action for airlines, airports, and into-plane operators.” - Alex Mattos, COO at i6 Group
